Pig kidney bridged 271 dialysis-free days before a human transplant
A patient with end-stage kidney disease lived for 271 days without dialysis using a gene-edited pig kidney, then successfully transitioned to a donated human kidney. Reported in The Lancet on September 3, it is the longest dialysis-free survival with a pig kidney in a living person and the first documented bridge to a human organ.
This does not show that pig kidneys solve the organ shortage or last for life. It was one patient under an FDA expanded-access protocol, and the xenograft developed microvascular injury and inflammation after immunosuppression was reduced during an infection.
What happened to the patient?
Tim Andrews, 66 at xenotransplant, had received hemodialysis for two years. The kidney worked immediately, an early T-cell rejection episode was treated, and no pig pathogen transmission was detected.
Why did the graft fail?
After about six months, immunosuppression was reduced during infection. Microvascular injury and inflammation progressed to failure, identifying problems future trials must address.

What happened next?
Eighty-two days after removal, he received a deceased-donor human kidney with immediate function. Follow-up found no evidence of sensitization, but longer monitoring is needed.
Why call it a bridge?
The organ temporarily replaced dialysis while a human kidney was awaited; it was not permanent therapy. Surgery, infection and immunosuppression risks remain substantial.
What must be checked next?
More patients, longer follow-up, infection surveillance and immune effects on later human transplantation are needed. One case cannot provide an average success rate.
