Europe’s clock change today widens the time difference with Korea

Global briefing

Briefings by language

The United Kingdom ends summer time by turning 02:00 back to 01:00 locally on October 25.

Germany moves 03:00 back to 02:00 at the same instant; Korea does not change its clocks, and the transition is at 10:00 Korean time today.

What changes for a meeting from Korea?

The UK returns from BST to GMT. Korea’s lead over the UK grows from eight to nine hours, and its lead over Germany from seven to eight. Keeping a meeting at 09:00 in either European location therefore makes it one hour later in Korea. This is a calculation from the cities’ UTC offsets, not evidence that every flight is delayed or every calendar invitation shifts.

How do you distinguish the repeated hour?

The 01:00 hour repeats in the UK and the 02:00 hour in Germany. A record containing only a date and local clock time can be ambiguous. Include the city or time zone and a UTC reference when arranging calls or online events. Before turning a phone clock back manually, check its automatic-time setting and displayed zone. Adjusting a clock that has already changed automatically would apply the change twice.

Is this the final clock change?

The UK government’s schedule already lists March 28, 2027 for the next move forward. ARD’s October 24 explanation gives the same next summer-time date for Germany and reports that EU countries have not agreed on abolition. Discussion is different from implementation. This change does not mean all European countries have adopted a single permanent time zone or ended seasonal changes.

What should travelers verify first?

Check the destination’s local date and time against the latest booking display from the airline, railway or event organizer. The offset examples here are not a verification of any particular service timetable. This article compares the UK and Germany specifically; it is not an exhaustive survey of exceptions across Europe. The UK government’s yearly table and ARD’s current explanation are linked for follow-up.
