Grand Canyon strata 1.23 billion years old preserve ancient orbital rhythms
Published in Nature Geoscience on 18 September 2026, the study correlated repeating layers at Red Canyon and Tapeats Creek. The US National Park Service lists the Hakatai Shale near 1,230 million years old.
Milanković cycles can change seasonal sunlight and leave repeating sedimentary patterns, turning layered rocks into an imperfect deep-time clock.
Difference
Obliquity-related frequencies and amplitudes were unusual compared with the recent past, possibly reflecting resonance shifts or nonlinear climate response.
Two sections
Matching distant outcrops reduces the chance that a local break or depositional quirk is mistaken for a global rhythm.

Moon connection
Lunar tides alter Earth’s rotation and axial motion over time, so ancient cycle combinations constrain Earth–Moon and planetary-orbit models.
Limits
Sedimentation rates and cycle assignments allow several interpretations. The preferred solution is evidence, not a unique final answer.
Next check
Comparable strata on other continents and tighter radiometric dates must reproduce the pattern. Data and analyses are on Zenodo.
