The first new ingredient in U.S. sunscreens in over 20 years will be available starting in August.
The U.S. FDA has finally recognized bemotriginol as a sunscreen ingredient, allowing it to be included in products starting August 9, 2026.
This does not mean that all products change immediately or are unconditionally superior to existing ingredients, and only applies to products that adhere to the permitted concentration and labeling standards.
What has changed?
Bemotriginol is the first ingredient newly included in the U.S. over-the-counter sunscreen standards. Although it has already been used for a long time in Europe and other regions, it has undergone separate data review in the United States. Manufacturers can formulate concentrations up to 6%.
Who can use it
The FDA decision covers products intended for adults and children ages 6 months and older. Infants under 6 months of age should prioritize shade and clothing and ask a medical staff about product use. If you have skin allergies, you should check the ingredient list for new ingredients as well.
What kind of light do you block?
Bemotriginol absorbs a wide range of UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for skin aging and burns. Data were reviewed showing that it is relatively stable to light and has little skin absorption. Actual protection depends not on any one ingredient, but on the finished product’s SPF, broad spectrum protection label and dosage.
Can you see it in the store right now?
Allowance days are not mandatory sales days. Since the manufacturer must design the product, undergo stability testing, production and distribution, the timing of release varies from company to company. After 18 months of market exclusivity, use by other manufacturers may also expand.
Instructions for use do not change
Apply liberally before going out and reapply after sweating, water, or over time. You should also wear shade, a hat and clothing. Allowing new ingredients does not mean that it makes UV exposure safe.
