Incheon warehouse fire: check evacuation zone, smoke guidance and school operations

- Checked: 2026-07-20 20:10 KST
- Basis: Official MOIS, National Fire Agency and National Safety 24 notices, plus the 18:19 KST field update
- Status markers: July 18 06:54 report; not fully extinguished at July 20 18:00; 59+ hours; active 116 m ramp-area evacuation zone; about 160 people at two shelters; one elementary school and 14 childcare centres closed on July 20.
The warehouse fire in Seoknam-dong, Incheon, was still not fully extinguished at 18:00 on July 20, more than 59 hours after the July 18 06:54 report. The national fire mobilization remained in force, and the district kept an evacuation order for a 116-metre radius around the facility ramp area.
The reported mandatory zone currently covers shops and factories south of the facility, not every nearby residential area. About 160 people were nevertheless staying voluntarily at shelters in Sinhyeon and Sinhyeonbuk elementary schools. One elementary school and 14 childcare centres were closed on July 20; families must recheck direct notices for July 21.
Do this first
- Follow emergency messages and physical cordons first. The 116-metre figure is the currently announced control zone, not a universal safe-distance rule. Do not cross a cordon to retrieve property or return before an official lifting notice.
- If authorities tell your area to limit smoke or dust entry, close windows and doors and reduce outdoor activity. Pause ventilation that draws outdoor air and be ready to move farther away if smoke or irritation reaches the room.
- Check work, school and childcare twice: tonight and just before departure. Confirm Shinsuk Elementary School, nearby childcare arrangements, substitute care and transport routes through each institution.
- Call 119 for breathing difficulty, severe coughing, chest pain or reduced consciousness. State your location and possible fire-smoke exposure.
- Keep vehicles away from the Seoknam-dong incident area. Do not obstruct fire engines or evacuation traffic; verify access before delivery, pickup or workplace entry.
What is confirmed
- Start: reported at 06:54 on July 18; officials said it began on the sixth floor.
- 18:00 July 20: not fully extinguished after more than 59 hours; black smoke was still leaving one building.
- Order: 116 metres around the ramp area, covering southern shops and factories, not all housing.
- Shelters: about 160 people at Sinhyeon and Sinhyeonbuk elementary schools; follow district admission updates.
- Education and care: Shinsuk Elementary School and 14 childcare centres closed on July 20; later schedules need direct confirmation.
Smoke and air-quality decisions
The official emergency message told nearby residents to close windows, avoid going out and reroute vehicles. Do not use a city-wide daily particulate rating alone as permission to open windows or approach the site. Fire smoke can vary sharply with distance and wind; incident-specific alerts take priority.
Public information does not establish the precise smoke composition or any person’s dose. Reduce exposure and tell a clinician where and when the fire-smoke exposure occurred if eye or throat irritation, cough or breathlessness persists.
Evacuation bag and return rule
- Pack: identification, medicines, phone and charger, water, a mask, and essential child or older-person supplies.
- Pets: prepare a carrier or lead, food and the shelter’s pet policy.
- Return: wait for the evacuation order or cordon to be officially lifted and for building safety clearance; less visible smoke is not clearance.
- Document: from a safe place, retain alerts, times, photographs and receipts for suspected home or business losses without approaching the site.
Heavy rain overlaps tonight
KMA forecasts 50–80 mm per hour in Incheon and northern Gyeonggi from 03:00 to 09:00 on July 21. Shelter travel, detours and flood risk may overlap, so finish necessary movement early and avoid underpasses, riverside and low-lying roads. Rain does not prove that the fire is out or that smoke is safe.

ONEPRESS decision: Do not turn the 116-metre number into your own safety boundary. Around Seoknam-dong, follow live alerts, cordons and the formal lifting of evacuation orders. Recheck shelter, school, work and detour plans tonight because very heavy rain may overlap the incident response in the morning.
