Salzburg has started restricting car access to the Old Town except for limited cases from July 1, 2026. Official Salzburg travel guidance now tells visitors that the easiest way into the center is to use Park & Ride plus public transport. Even hotel guests in the Old Town are not simply waved through; the official hotel-access page says you need a valid booking confirmation to receive access information.

The real issue is that the old habit of driving directly to the door no longer works for many visitors. During July and August, the city is clearly signaling that tourist car entry should no longer be the default. The practical question now is not whether you are still going, but where the car stops, what proof you need, and how much walking or transfer time is added.

Who should recheck now

  • Day-trippers coming to Salzburg by rental car or private car
  • Families staying inside the Old Town with bags or children
  • Travelers expecting to unload luggage directly at a central hotel door
  • Drivers crossing in from southern Germany and planning a quick city-center arrival

What to change today

  1. Check whether your hotel is inside the restricted Old Town zone.
  2. Keep your booking confirmation ready. It matters for hotel-access exceptions.
  3. Make Park & Ride your default plan. That is the official travel recommendation.
  4. Add time for unloading, walking, or transit transfers.
  5. Do not rely only on map apps. Actual entry depends on local access rules and your stay details.
