After storm Austen, electricity restoration continues in northwestern France

Global briefing

Briefings by language

Power restoration continued in Brittany and Normandy on October 24 after storm Austen crossed northwestern France.

TF1’s evening figure of 72,000 households covers those two regions at that time, not a definitive current total for all France.

Why can restoration outlast the wind?

In its October 23 announcement, distributor Enedis explains the need for safe weather and road access. The currently accessible text lists 2,000 employees and 600 contractor employees working in the field. Personnel deployed are not households restored. TF1’s October 24 field account also describes fallen trees blocking access in places. Weather improvement and repairs to lines and roads do not finish simultaneously.

Why do outage figures differ?

TF1’s daytime article contains regional counts from different moments. Its evening item, posted at 21:20, gives 72,000 households across the two regions. Figures with different timestamps and coverage cannot simply be subtracted or treated as a national total. Households are not a count of individual people either. We retain the evening figure’s date and area rather than implying it remains unchanged when read in Korea.

What was checked on the ground?

TF1 interviewed a resident, a baker and a hair-and-beauty business in Bacqueville-en-Caux, Seine-Maritime. They described disruption to heating, appointments and keeping production usable. This checks local impacts separately from the operator’s restoration statement. One village cannot represent every affected home or France’s economic loss. An individual business’s revenue estimate is not added up into a national damage figure.

What should local residents check?

Enedis says never to touch fallen lines or objects contacting them, to respect cordons and to report abnormalities. Its danger-reporting number is 09 726 750 followed by the French department’s two digits. Check the operator’s local outage service for restoration information; a national article cannot establish that an individual home’s supply has safely returned. Neither a live total nor a particular household’s restoration deadline is guaranteed here.
