Google makes source links more visible in AI Search
Google announced changes on October 15 to make links to original websites more visible in AI Mode and AI Overviews.
Some features are rolling out while others remain tests, so this does not mean every account changes at once or that increased publisher visits have been demonstrated.
How does the route from an answer to its source change?
Links embedded in answer words or phrases will appear higher more frequently, and related articles at the end of some responses will receive thumbnails and a more prominent design. This offers more chances to open a source alongside a claim rather than searching for a list after finishing the answer. A visible link nevertheless does not establish that the original page supports the claim; the underlying material still matters.
Are official-site sections and news cards the same feature?
A dedicated top section for the one or two official websites needed to complete a task is being tested, with context explaining each link. Prominent timely-article carousels, by contrast, are starting to expand to additional locations and languages. They also highlight websites selected through Preferred Sources. Distinguishing a test from a rollout helps users avoid mistaking an unavailable feature on their account for a fault.

Where does clicking a creator’s name lead?
AI Mode is testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results that open Search profiles. Independent specialist coverage points out that these first lead to a Google profile page, not directly to an external homepage. Profiles can provide context about a creator’s other work, but they are not the same page as the original video or post.
Do larger links mean more website visits?
The announcement describes interface and navigation changes, not proof of recovered referral clicks. Google says the number of Preferred Sources users has grown by more than seven times since the start of the year; that is not the growth rate of outbound clicks from AI answers. The specialist outlet separately highlights missing click data. The useful next checks concern actual journeys to original websites and measurable traffic changes, as well as whether the feature appears.
