Japan will pair expert teams with about 10 municipalities facing urban bears
Japan’s Environment Ministry will select about ten prefectural or municipal governments with limited bear-response experience and pair each with a two- or three-person expert team. Applications run from September 4 to 5 p.m. on October 2.
The programme does not ask residents or ordinary staff to chase or capture bears. It is limited to eligible applicants, and any immediate encounter remains subject to police, municipal control and official safety guidance.
Who can apply?
Eligible local governments must want stronger urban-area prevention, assign staff and cooperate in meetings, field surveys, trials and evaluation.
What will teams do?
Advisers identify routes, waste or fruit attractants and capacity gaps, then assemble specialists to refine manuals and test selected measures.
What does about ten mean?
Roughly ten bodies will be chosen if applications are numerous. It is not nationwide deployment or a safety guarantee; selection is expected in October.
Why a pilot?
Terrain, food, waste and population patterns differ. Local trials can test what works and build evidence other municipalities may later use.
What should residents do?
Do not approach or film a bear. Increase distance calmly, report it locally, secure food and waste, remove unharvested fruit and follow the ministry manual and local alerts.
