Europe reports 1,086 locally acquired West Nile cases across 15 countries
ECDC counted 1,086 locally acquired human West Nile virus cases in 15 European countries during the 2026 transmission season through September 3. Local human transmission had been identified in 144 areas, including 20 added for the first time that week.
The total covers diagnosed and reported local cases, not every infection. Many infections are asymptomatic and reporting lags, so the true number may be higher; the weekly overview chiefly supports blood and organ donation safety measures rather than a complete risk assessment.
Where were most cases?
Italy reported 516 and Greece 284, followed by Spain 88, Romania 56, North Macedonia 55 and France 36. Area counts and case counts are different.
What is an affected area?
It is an administrative area with at least one locally acquired human case in the season. Probable cases may sometimes establish an area when confirmation is delayed; animal and mosquito data are excluded.
What is the health risk?
Most infections cause no symptoms, some cause fever and aches, and a small share affects the nervous system. Older and immunocompromised people face higher severe-disease risk.
What can people do?
Use approved repellent, wear covering clothing around dusk, maintain screens and remove standing water. Tell clinicians about travel or residence in affected areas if symptoms appear.
What comes next?
Transmission often peaks in August and September. Weekly ECDC human data and monthly ECDC–EFSA human and animal reports will refine this provisional September 3 snapshot.
