Bhutan eliminates dog-transmitted human rabies as a public-health problem
WHO validated on September 4 that Bhutan has eliminated dog-transmitted human rabies as a public-health problem. The country has recorded no human deaths from dog-mediated rabies since June 2023 and demonstrated capacity to prevent its return.
This does not mean rabies virus has disappeared or that a dog bite is safe. Validation requires at least two years without human deaths plus systems to prevent re-emergence, so vaccination and immediate post-exposure care remain essential.
What exactly was validated?
WHO independently reviewed national evidence and response capacity. Bhutan submitted its dossier in June 2026 after more than two years without a dog-mediated human rabies death; the finding does not cover every form of animal rabies.
How were deaths stopped?
Health and livestock authorities combined mass dog vaccination, dog-population management, rapid care for bite victims and surveillance. The result reflects years of linked human and animal health work, not one campaign.
What should someone bitten still do?
Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water and seek medical care immediately. Post-exposure prophylaxis prevents death when given before symptoms, and the new status is not a reason to delay treatment.
Why does this matter beyond Bhutan?
Rabies is almost always fatal after symptoms but is preventable. Bhutan offers a practical One Health example for the global goal of ending dog-mediated human rabies deaths by 2030.
What must be watched next?
High dog-vaccination coverage, border surveillance and access to vaccines must continue. Sustaining zero deaths and detecting animal cases quickly will determine whether the achievement lasts.
