14-15 days is the critical time for returning to Obon, Japan. How to avoid sections longer than 10 km.
Japanese highway operators predicted that congestion on the return route for the 2026 Obon holiday would be concentrated on August 14th and 15th.
This does not mean that all roads across the country are blocked at the same time, and you should check real-time traffic information again just before departure.
When and which direction is crowded?
The official forecast period generally runs from August 7 to 16. Congestion on the downbound route to rural areas was concentrated on the 12th and 13th, and congestion on the return route to urban areas such as Tokyo and Nagoya was presented as the critical period on the 14th and 15th. Operators separately disclosed the sections and times when congestion of more than 10 kilometers is expected.
Predicted time is not arrival time
Congestion start, peak, and resolution times are estimates based on past traffic volume. If variables such as accidents, construction, or rain occur, congestion may last longer or be moved to another section. It is better to look at the NEXCO real-time service and road electronic signs together rather than relying on the navigation’s estimated arrival time alone.
How do I change my departure time?
Operators are advised to move travel times around the peak of congestion and, if possible, to choose less congested days. Lines to enter rest areas can also increase traffic congestion on the main road, so you should check your fuel and charging status in advance. When driving long distances, preventing drowsy driving is more important than avoiding traffic jams, and excessive late-night driving should be avoided.
You should also check for toll discounts.
To distribute Obon congestion, holiday discounts on the highway are not applicable on some dates. You must check with the operator for information on discount exclusion days depending on the road section. Using ETC does not automatically provide the same discount rate in all time zones.
