Dogs really held a surfing championship, and Rosie won it
Dogs competed in a real surfing contest on a California beach, and Rosie took the official overall title. The result came from the 2026 World Dog Surfing Championships at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica on August 1.
The dogs did not paddle offshore and choose waves by themselves. Humans launched the boards and helped with safety, and “overall champion” means the winner under this event’s rules and judging.
What exactly did they compete on?
Each heat lasted 10 minutes. Dogs could catch as many waves as possible and earn up to 10 points from each judge.
Judges considered ride length, technique such as standing on all fours, confidence, wave size or strength, and style. A trick such as turning on the board could earn a bonus.
Who won this year?
The official overall podium and category winners are below. The results page does not publish detailed scores, so the winning margins cannot be checked.

Was there no human help?
Human handlers watched for a suitable wave and launched the board. The dog then balanced and rode toward the beach.
It would be wrong to describe this as dogs finding waves with no help. But balance, posture and the ride after launch were genuinely judged.
The safety rules are quite specific
Dogs had to wear life jackets or safety vests, and boards had to be made of foam or foam and fiberglass. Humans entering the water also needed a life jacket, vest or rash guard.
A competing dog could not be leashed or attached to the board in the water because that could create an entanglement risk. Dogs had to remain leashed on the beach when they were not competing.
It was more than a visual gag
This was the event’s 10th anniversary. Along with size divisions, the program included two-dog and human-dog tandem events on a shared board.
The beach also hosted adoption booths, pet wellness activities and charity fundraising. The spectacle of surfing dogs was tied to support for rescue animals and local groups.
