Bundibugyo Ebola has grown to 2,905 confirmed DRC cases
Official WHO and ECDC material shows the 2026 Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda is still active. ECDC says DRC reported 2,905 confirmed cases and 1,269 related deaths as of 22 July 2026, while WHO says there is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for this Ebola virus species.
The key point is that Ebola risk depends on the virus species, available countermeasures, and access to affected communities. This should not be framed as a general global panic: ECDC assesses the likelihood of infection for people in the EU/EEA as very low.
What Happened
WHO says Bundibugyo virus disease was confirmed in DRC and Uganda in May 2026. WHO Africa describes a PHEIC declared on 17 May 2026, with the response centered on Ituri Province and complicated by cross-border movement with Uganda.

WHO DON613 gives 2,124 confirmed DRC cases, 828 deaths, and 390 recoveries as of 15 July 2026. ECDC’s 24 July update says DRC reported 2,905 confirmed cases and 1,269 related deaths as of 22 July. For Uganda, the WHO DON lists 20 cumulative confirmed cases, 18 recoveries, and 2 deaths, with no new cases since 21 June 2026.
Why Bundibugyo Is Difficult
WHO states that there is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. The response therefore relies heavily on early diagnosis, isolation, contact tracing, infection prevention, safe burials, and community trust.
What Not To Mix
WHO’s detailed epidemiological table and ECDC’s latest compiled number use different reporting dates. They should not be added together or treated as the same day’s increase. Medical evacuations have occurred, but ECDC still assesses the EU/EEA infection likelihood as very low.
