A 1,431.5-kilogram pumpkin takes the world weight record

Global briefing

Briefings by language

A pumpkin grown by Ron Wallace in the United States has been verified by Guinness World Records as the heaviest pumpkin at 1,431.5 kilograms.

It was weighed on October 10 and its verification was announced on October 14; this does not also make it the record holder for every crop or for pumpkin circumference.

How much did the record change in one week?

The pumpkin registered 3,156 pounds at the competition at Frerichs Farm near Warren, Rhode Island. Ian Paton in Britain had set the previous mark of 1,295.8 kilograms on October 3. Subtracting the published kilogram figures gives 135.7 kilograms. That is an editorial comparison between two different growers’ pumpkins, not growth achieved by one pumpkin in a week.

What came before the weighing?

Great Pumpkin Commonwealth officials assessed the pumpkin’s condition and compliance before it went on the scales. A record is not established simply because a photograph makes a fruit look enormous. Guinness describes this as the first valid pumpkin to exceed 3,000 pounds. The relevant measures are verified weight and eligibility, rather than perspective in an image or the yield of an entire field.

Does the heaviest also have the largest circumference?

Weight and circumference are different records. Guinness gives Wallace’s pumpkin a circumference of 640 centimetres, less than the 649.8 centimetres of the Paton brothers’ 2025 pumpkin. Shape and density can make a broader-looking fruit lighter. This is a horticultural achievement involving a large individual specimen, not an experiment showing equivalent improvements in taste, nutrition or ordinary farm productivity.

Why has the earlier pending report changed?

AP’s October 12 coverage described verification as pending. Guinness’s October 14 announcement and WPRI’s follow-up establish that verification was completed. The earlier status is therefore not presented as current. Wallace said this was his first year using a greenhouse, but that is not a controlled comparison isolating a greenhouse effect. Guinness’s category updates remain the reference for the current record and any future replacement.
