Small shades reduced coral paling during a heat event

Global briefing

Briefings by language

Small shades placed above Florida corals reduced loss of color during high water temperatures.

The trial compared two species at one site; it did not establish improved survival or cooler seawater.

How many corals were compared?

The paper published on October 2 describes a 2024 field experiment at Newfound Harbor in the Florida Keys. Researchers examined 20 colonies of each of two species. Within each species, 10 received shade and 10 served as controls. Thus 20 of 40 colonies were shaded. The count does not mean 40 separate reefs.

What did the shade do?

The team installed small frames with agricultural shade cloth about 30 centimeters above the corals. The manufacturer rated the cloth at 60% light reduction. Strong sunlight can add stress to the microscopic algae living with corals when water is hot. The apparatus tested a reduction in light exposure; it did not remove heat from the surrounding sea.

Why are color and survival different measures?

Shaded corals lost less color than controls. However, neither group had bleaching-related deaths, so the experiment cannot quantify deaths prevented by shade. The density of the associated algae did not show the same improvement. Color is a useful field indicator but does not measure every aspect of reproduction or long-term health.

Could it work across a reef?

Permit delays pushed installation later than intended, and the shades were temporarily removed during storms. Anchoring, maintenance costs, waves and boat traffic matter in practice. Findings from two species at one site cannot be generalized to every coral or sea. Next checks should cover other sites and species, with long-term survival, disease and reproduction data. Local shading may be an auxiliary measure; it does not solve ocean warming.
