Humanity’s first lunar-farside soil sample was donated to the UN
CNSA, China’s Vienna mission and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs held the handover. The sample is intended for permanent display; more than 400 representatives and guests attended.
The donation is only part of the mission’s total 1,935.3 grams returned to Earth. Official accounts did not state the mass of this display piece.
Why the far side matters
The Moon keeps one face toward Earth, making direct radio contact with the far side difficult, and its geology differs. Chang’e 6 made the first farside sample return in 2024.
Timeline
The probe launched on 3 May 2024 and its return capsule landed in Inner Mongolia on 25 June. A UN meeting transcript records the total sample mass as 1,935.3 grams.
Meaning
A portion of rare material kept in a national programme is moving into a public international setting. Visitors can see it, but it is not an open sample for handling or analysis.
Unknowns
The public notices omit detailed visitor dates, display mass and container specifications. Research allocations and this exhibition object are separate.
