India launches its first geosynchronous imaging satellite; EOS-05 is still raising orbit
ISRO launched the 2,367 kg EOS-05 on GSLV-F17 on September 4 and placed it in the planned sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit. It is India’s first imaging satellite designed for geosynchronous orbit and aims to revisit the same region rapidly for disaster and agricultural monitoring.
A successful launch is not yet successful arrival in the final orbit or full instrument operation. EOS-05 must raise its orbit under its own power and complete commissioning before its first imagery and service status can be assessed.
What did the launch achieve?
GSLV-F17 lifted off from Sriharikota at 2:55 a.m. IST and released EOS-05 about 18 minutes later. The published nominal orbit was about 171 km by 31,026 km at 19.28 degrees inclination.
Why image from geosynchronous orbit?
A geosynchronous satellite can watch the same region for long periods, enabling rapid revisits of storms, fires and crops. The trade-off is distance and potentially lower spatial resolution than low-orbit satellites.

What is EOS-05 meant to do?
ISRO lists visible, infrared, multispectral and hyperspectral observations for agriculture, environment and disaster management. Actual cadence and quality await commissioning and data-policy details.
Why is this a milestone?
The predecessor EOS-03 was lost during its 2021 launch. Successful transfer-orbit insertion gives India another chance to establish geosynchronous imaging, but service has not started.
What should be checked next?
Orbit-raising completion, deployment status, instrument health and the first released images are the next milestones. Delivery speed to operational users will determine practical value.
