The Department of Energy said 278 first projects were selected across all 50 states, covering areas such as energy, materials, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, nuclear safety, and national security.<\/p>\n<h2>The Scale In Numbers<\/h2>\n<p>NSF separately announced $380 million for 20 teams building a national network of AI automated laboratories. NASA said it would connect more than 150 petabytes of mission data to the discovery effort. If the system works, fields slowed by repeated experiments, such as batteries, chips, drugs, and climate technologies, could see shorter discovery cycles. It will also pressure other governments, universities, and companies to define how AI-run science should be governed.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Not Final Yet<\/h2>\n<p>DOE says the selections are for award negotiations and do not become funding commitments until negotiations are completed.
