Since its July 3 update, another 664 confirmed cases and 376 confirmed deaths were reported.

WHO cautions that some newly reported cases and deaths may come from testing backlogs and expanded surveillance rather than recent transmission alone. Even so, 38 of 46 affected health zones reported cases within the past 21 days.

Ituri accounts for 89.6% of confirmed DRC cases, with cases also reported in Haut-Uele, North Kivu, South Kivu and Tshopo. Among health workers, 119 cases and 36 deaths have been reported.

Uganda is on a different track

Uganda has reported 20 confirmed cases, with the last case identified on June 21. Its most recent patient was discharged after two negative tests on July 16, starting the 42-day enhanced-surveillance countdown required before the outbreak can be declared over.

WHO says no community transmission has been reported in Uganda and all cases were in Kampala. Importation risk remains while transmission continues in DRC. Read the two countries separately: active expansion in DRC, surveillance and importation risk in Uganda.

What travelers should do now

Check the DRC destination by province. CDC recommends avoiding non-essential travel to Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu and Tshopo. Map the actual province, health zone and overland route rather than relying on the country name alone.

Build a 21-day post-travel plan. After travel in DRC or Uganda, monitor for fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, vomiting or diarrhoea for 21 days.

Avoid exposure routes. Do not touch blood or body fluids, contaminated items, bodies at unsafe burials, wildlife or bushmeat. Avoid non-essential visits to health facilities in affected areas.

Call before seeking care. If symptoms develop, contact the local health authority or clinic first and disclose the route and exposure. Avoid public transport and close contact while awaiting instructions.

Teams should verify evacuation, not just insurance. Put infectious-disease exclusions, upfront-payment rules, destination hospital, isolation arrangements and stop-work thresholds in writing before departure.

Keep the risk in proportion

WHO assesses risk as very high in DRC and high in Uganda, but low for the rest of Africa and globally. CDC says overall risk to the U.S. public and travelers remains low.

WHO does not recommend blanket travel or trade restrictions on DRC or Uganda. That is not a guarantee for an individual itinerary; it means decisions should be destination- and exposure-specific.

There is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. A vaccine for another Ebola virus type should not be assumed to protect against this outbreak.

People are not considered infectious until symptoms begin. Simply sharing an airport is not automatically a high-risk exposure.

Pre-departure checklist

Have you mapped transit airports, land borders, mining sites, camps and health-facility visits?

Do you know whom to call and where to isolate if acute fever begins?

Can you adjust plans and record symptoms for 21 days after return?

Has the travel approver read the WHO July 17 update and CDC destination notice?

For health or aid work, have PPE, infection-control training, exposure reporting and medical evacuation been tested rather than merely promised?

Official and primary sources

WHO Disease Outbreak News — 17 July 2026

CDC Ebola Outbreak: Current Situation — 17 July 2026

WHO Africa — ongoing Bundibugyo outbreak

ONEPRESS decision: DRC transmission is expanding while Uganda has entered enhanced surveillance.
