The rear body rotates strongly while the head avoids turning upside down with it, retaining its forward direction and relatively steady height. Alternating movements bring an arched body section down beside the head and into the next cycle. Different body regions do different jobs without a separate wheel axle. Head stability may aid control; the work does not establish every sensory mechanism.

What does four times faster mean?

The institution reports peak forward speeds of 1.72–3.69 m/s during rolling, about four times the peak measured during ordinary lateral undulation. The animals also followed a track only 20 cm wide. These are not long-distance averages or speeds guaranteed in the wild. BBC’s approximately nine-mile-per-hour account does not precisely match the primary upper limit, so this article uses the original m/s range.

Research photograph of Pseudorabdion saravacense. This is not a photograph of the rolling movement.

How many snakes were observed?

Science News interviewed the researcher and describes 13 Pseudorabdion snakes from three species, with six Calamaria snakes for comparison. All the former rolled; the comparison animals did not. That sample cannot represent every species. Uninvolved biologist Jessica Tingle raised questions about evolution and differences in anatomy or neural control. Independent reporting is a separate check, not a replication experiment.

What remains unknown?

The contribution is a video-based explanation of an unusual movement, not a new snake species or a capability established for all snakes. These accounts do not determine endurance or energetic costs in the wild. The institutional page, paper title and DOI, and separate researcher/external-expert reporting help distinguish observation from interpretation. We do not claim to have read the full journal paper. Do not disturb or chase wildlife to provoke the behavior.

Primary sources and independent checks

Research institution: movement, speeds, 20 cm track, paper title and DOI; no claim of full-paper access: Toho University · 2026-10-20

Independent interviews: Kojima and uninvolved Tingle, sample and open questions; not experimental replication: Science News · Maria Temming · 2026-10-19

Comparison: approximate nine-mph retelling; primary speed range takes priority, not an independent experiment: BBC Newsround · 2026-10-21

Recent rediscovery route: Toho material republished, not counted as independent confirmation: ScienceDaily · 2026-10-24

Read in other languages

한국어 · English · Español · 日本語 · Tiếng Việt

Multi-angle video separates body rotation from head stabilization.
