Producer organization PPAQ holds surplus syrup as a buffer against swings in supply and prices. The Canadian Press interviewed president Luc Goulet and, separately, industry council CIE president Louis Turenne. They described strong demand and American buyers building inventories. Both represent the industry; their accounts are not a neutral warehouse audit.

A large harvest does not measure the remaining buffer

PPAQ’s May 26 release put the 2026 harvest at 229.5 million pounds. It reported 202 million pounds sold to processors during the preceding year. Those figures cover different periods and cannot be subtracted to calculate current stocks. Annual production and the reserve buffer measure different things. Advance purchases can move syrup from the producers’ reserve into buyers’ warehouses.

AI-generated explanatory illustration, not an actual site, warehouse, exhibited artwork or observation photograph; architecture, water levels and orbits are not reproduced to scale.

Why this is not a sudden October event

A March 25 Le Soleil article preserved by Université Laval already described the reserve as fully sold. It distinguished completed sales from physical collection: contracted syrup could still be on the warehouse floor. That earlier account rules out treating the October interview as the first depletion date. Equally, March quantities cannot be reused as today’s inventory. The verified story concerns the recent statement and the earlier distinction between sales and storage.

The remaining uncertainty concerns the whole supply chain

We have not obtained an October 23 ledger combining warehouse holdings and buyers’ inventories. Nationwide shortages, specific price rises and the next harvest’s size therefore remain unestablished. A smaller buffer matters if weather harms production, but actual scarcity depends on stocks throughout distribution and future output. Follow PPAQ’s inventory and sales reports and the next harvest results.

Primary sources and independent checks

Primary: the producers’ May harvest and sales release, not an October warehouse audit or depletion date: PPAQ / Cision · 2026-05-26

Independent reporting: CP’s separate interviews with PPAQ and CIE presidents; industry accounts, not audited stocks: La Presse Canadienne / Ma Beauce · 2026-10-19

Earlier check: March Le Soleil reporting preserved by Laval distinguishes sales from collection, not current October inventory: Le Soleil / Université Laval · 2026-03-25

Read in other languages

한국어 · English · Español · 日本語 · Tiếng Việt

A recent industry interview highlights a smaller supply buffer.
