It is not a count of one day or just this year. It covers separate record periods in 2005–2007 and 2016–2025. The institute calls it 11 years while the news report says roughly 12; this account specifies the periods and does not calculate an annual average.

Why are there two different totals?

The original material contains 14,249 reports. Researchers produced 11,464 valid records after filtering uncertain locations and invalid reports, among other exclusions. That valid subset is the denominator for the 38%. Other recorded animals include 2,856 raccoon dogs, 1,444 masked palm civets and 592 raccoons. Treating every initial report as an equally confirmed collision would change what the figures represent.

AI-generated explanatory illustration; not an actual photograph or an exact reconstruction of architecture, observations or experiments.

How did everyday administration become data?

Residents reported carcasses, contractors collected them, and dates, locations and animal identifications were recorded. Researchers then reviewed photographs and reports to verify the identifications. This preserves differences between a resident’s identification, a contractor’s label and the expert’s final classification. The value goes beyond adding up carcasses: the records can also help assess how people recognise animals in routine municipal work.

What can 38% not tell us?

Unreported or undiscovered deaths may be missing. A place with many records may contain more animals, but may also be easier for people to observe. The dataset alone cannot establish species populations or an individual cat’s collision probability. The researchers’ recommendation for indoor cat keeping is also separate from a demonstrated reduction caused by a particular intervention. Further checking can follow the paper’s classification and location methods and its public data. Independent news coverage is not a separate field replication.

Primary sources and independent checks

Institute primary account: 11,464 valid records, 4,348 cats, 14,249 reports and observation limits: 森林総合研究所: 5 October 2026

Original paper abstract and record: publication, collection structure and periods; detailed findings checked in institute account: Scientific Data: Jingu et al., 5 August 2026

Independent reporting: city scope, expressway exclusion and 38%; duration wording differs, so no annual average: 共同通信 / 大分合同新聞: 14 October 2026

Read in other languages

한국어 · English · Español · 日本語 · Tiếng Việt

Cats account for about 38% of 11,464 valid records in one Japanese city.
