The practice began in 1988 to keep something of its international poetry festival present after the visiting poets had left. Large vehicle sides offered a way to carry literature through neighbourhoods. People could encounter a poem on an ordinary journey without attending a festival: the cultural experience followed the route of an existing public service.

How does the selection keep changing?

The municipal cleaning service tells Poetry International when new refuse trucks or sweepers are arriving. The organisation selects the lines to display. Hundreds of lines by local, Dutch and international poets have appeared over the years. This year also brought the first line in Dutch Sign Language. The continuing choices concern which works and languages become visible in public space, rather than simply repeating a fixed decoration.

AI-generated explanatory illustration; not an actual photograph or an exact reconstruction of architecture, observations or experiments.

What is being kept alive after 38 years?

The calendar-year difference between 1988 and 2026 is 38 years. The central idea is continuity in the partnership and the activity, rather than retaining one original truck unchanged. Vehicles can be replaced while the selection of poetry and its daily journey through the city continue. Recognition also does not establish that every resident enjoys the poems; a heritage decision is different from a survey of public opinion.

What remains to be seen?

Entry in a national inventory and future safeguarding work are separate matters. The announcement does not by itself establish a dedicated budget or a timetable for every vehicle. Subsequent municipal and Poetry International updates can show new selections and how sign-language work is presented. The project demonstrates a route for sharing culture through everyday services; it is not research proving an increase in reading or wellbeing.

Primary sources and independent checks

Municipal primary announcement: 1988 origin, festival purpose, selection and national recognition: Gemeente Rotterdam: 13 October 2026

Organiser: inventory name, sign-language addition and ongoing practice; not an independent report: Poetry International: 13 October 2026

Independent reporting: checks 1988 origin and national recognition; no poems or interview passages reproduced: The Guardian: Senay Boztas, 15 October 2026

Read in other languages

한국어 · English · Español · 日本語 · Tiếng Việt

A practice begun in 1988 has entered the national intangible heritage inventory.
