At announcement, the service is available globally in English. Users submit a file so the tool can look for a SynthID mark that is difficult to perceive directly. The change concerns access; it does not mean every content-creation tool on the internet now embeds the same mark.

Where the mark comes from

SynthID embeds imperceptible marks in images, video and audio during AI creation workflows that adopt the technology. Google’s announcement names its own content and partners including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao. That list does not establish support for every product or file from each company. Apple is described as joining soon, so it should be treated as an announced plan rather than an already supported service.

This AI-generated illustration explains the topic; it is not a photograph or an exact reconstruction of real people, sites, experiments, specimens or official documents.

Detection and non-detection mean different things

A detected mark provides evidence that an AI generation or editing process using the technology was involved. Whether a whole scene was generated or only partly edited still needs context. A non-detection means the tool did not find the mark. Lowyat’s independent coverage also stresses that AI tools without SynthID exist, so that result cannot establish that AI was never used.

Origins and event context still need checking

A watermark does not verify every claim about an event shown in a file, and its absence does not establish the correct filming date or place. For reporting or disputes, examine the original uploader, earliest publication, original file and other records together. The announcement does not establish file-specific false-positive rates or performance after every edit. The next step before use is to check the official service’s current support information and explanation of results.

Primary source and independent checks

Primary source and official explanation: Google

Primary source and official explanation: SynthID Detector

Independent reporting check: Lowyat

Read in other languages

한국어 · English · Español · 日本語 · Tiếng Việt

Google announced on October 7 that its tool for checking SynthID marks in images, video and audio would become publicly available in English.

["post-2616","briefing","type-briefing","status-publish","hentry
["GET
