FIDE confirmed that Britain’s 11-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan became the youngest Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in history.

WGM is a separate title for women players, not the youngest-record claim for the Grandmaster (GM) title available regardless of gender.

A September achievement appears in October’s official record

The achievement came at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. FIDE’s 26 September tournament report described her fulfilling the WGM requirements; its October rating announcement explicitly identified the youngest WGM record. ChessBase and The Indian Express confirmed the achievement. This briefing concerns a recent tournament record reflected in official data and subsequent attention, not a match played today.

A 2382 rating and a 28-point gain are not win counts

FIDE’s October list gives Sivanandan a rating of 2382, up 28 points from the previous listing. A rating changes with results and opponents’ strength. Gaining 28 points does not mean winning 28 games, and 2382 is not her ordinal position among all players. Separating a title from a changing monthly rating makes the achievement easier to understand.

Shortening the title changes the claim

Chess has distinct titles including GM, IM and WGM. Reading Woman Grandmaster simply as a grandmaster who is a woman confuses WGM with GM. The remarkable verified achievement is reaching the WGM standard at 11. Calling her the youngest holder of every title or a world champion would exceed the evidence. An age record is one sign of ability, not a guarantee of future victories.

What to verify next

Later coverage also reports Guinness recognition, but the new record certificate itself was not directly checked in this verification. The headline and central claim therefore remain bounded by FIDE’s WGM confirmation. Official title records and monthly ratings are the route for following subsequent registration and progress. Tournament results, titles and ratings should be read separately; speculation about private life or future results adds nothing necessary to this achievement.
