These are estimates of ancient deposition, not present-day measurements.

Water played two roles

Ultraviolet light split water vapor and supplied reactive hydrogen that helped form formaldehyde in a carbon-dioxide-rich atmosphere. Rain then carried atmospheric material to the surface, linking water to both production and deposition.

Which Mars was simulated

The team modeled warm conditions around 3.8–3.6 billion years ago, when liquid water may have formed rivers, lakes and a northern ocean. Temperature, vapor, pressure and ultraviolet light were combined in a global map compared with rover landing sites.

This AI-generated image explains the topic; it is not a photograph of the actual experiment, observation or field site.

Why this is not life

Formaldehyde can start reactions that make more complex molecules such as sugars and amino acids in water. That is far from showing life arose. The work detected neither organisms nor formaldehyde remaining on Mars today.

What can test the map

Rover measurements of minerals and organic chemistry can be compared with regions predicted to have received more deposition. Reconstructed atmosphere, rainfall and terrain remain uncertain, so the map cannot by itself choose a future landing site.

Primary source and independent checks

Primary paper: The Planetary Science Journal 원 논문

Institutional or data check: 도호쿠대 연구 설명

Independent or context check: EurekAlert 독립 배포 확인

Read in other languages

한국어 · English · Español · 日本語 · Tiếng Việt

A warm, wet Mars simulation for 3.8–3.6 billion years ago suggests water vapor aided formaldehyde production and rain delivered it to the ground.
