New Zealand’s Nicole Murray set a world record and still received bronze. It happened in the Glasgow 2026 women’s C4-C5 4,000m individual pursuit on 30 July.<\/p>\n

There was no overturned decision. Medals came from finals assigned by qualifying rank, while the world record was tracked separately for the C5 sport class.<\/p>\n

What happened?<\/h2>\n

Murray rode 5:06.199 in the bronze final. The official Glasgow 2026 record table lists that time as a women’s C5 4,000m world record.<\/p>\n

The race started at 17:14 and was already designated as the bronze contest. Murray beat her opponent and secured third place overall.<\/p>\n

How can a world record earn bronze?<\/h2>\n

The fastest two qualifiers advanced to the gold final, while third and fourth went to the bronze final. Murray had qualified third in 5:06.878.<\/p>\n

No matter how fast she rode later, her final could award only bronze. The medal bracket and the class-specific record measured different things.<\/p>\n

The record changed again seven minutes later<\/h2>\n

The gold final started at 17:21. England’s Morgan Newberry rode 5:05.764 and took silver in that race.<\/p>\n

Newberry was 0.435 seconds faster than Murray. Both times appear in the official broken-record table, with Newberry’s faster mark becoming the current C5 record.<\/p>\n

Why did C4 and C5 race together?<\/h2>\n

C4 and C5 are para-cycling sport classes based on functional ability. A lower number generally indicates an impairment with a greater effect on cycling performance.<\/p>\n

Glasgow combined the classes into one medal event. Qualifying displayed a factored time, but world records remained tied to each rider’s class and actual ride time.<\/p>\n

The verified result is that Murray broke the C5 world record in the bronze final and Newberry broke it again in the following gold final.<\/p>\n
