Busan shark Bukhangi leaves canal after third operation; offshore return remains unconfirmed
Bukhangi, the dusky shark that spent more than a month in an artificial canal at Busan North Port, left the waterway after a third guidance operation on October 21.
The confirmed result is a canal exit, not proof that it left the entire harbour or recovered its health.
Why officials stopped waiting
South Korea’s oceans ministry identifies Bukhangi as an approximately 3-metre dusky shark first seen on September 18. After two unsuccessful attempts, agencies consulted experts on October 19 and coordinated plans on October 20. Restricted water depth and falling temperatures supported another intervention. Feeding had not been observed; that is an observation limit, not a test proving it ate nothing throughout its stay.
A moving net behind the shark
The third plan attached nets to floating work platforms, or pontoons. Crews would advance them as the shark moved seaward and prevent it returning into the canal. Preliminary checks covered underwater terrain and obstacles. The method addressed depth and terrain constraints encountered earlier. It is a description of a professional operation, not a rescue procedure for members of the public to copy.

Leaving a canal is not leaving a harbour
AFP directly obtained confirmation from a ministry spokesperson on the evening of October 21 that the shark had left the waterway. Its report said an exit from the harbour receiving the canal remained unclear. Calling this a completed return to offshore waters would exceed that evidence. Lengths of about 3 and 3.5 metres also appear in reporting and photo captions; this article uses the ministry’s approximately 3 metres.
Location and health are the next checks
An exit alone does not resolve concerns about feeding or balance. Further agency updates on the animal’s location and condition are needed. Some groups link its appearance to climate change, but no study presented here establishes why this particular shark entered the canal. Visitors should follow access restrictions and staff instructions around the operation.
Primary sources and independent checks
Primary: depth, health concerns and pontoon plan. Text refers to October 20 although the page registration says October 21; it is a plan, not the outcome: 해양수산부 · 3차 외해 유도 계획
Independent check: direct confirmation from a ministry spokesperson establishes canal exit while harbour exit remains unclear; not a repost of the plan: AFP · canal exit and remaining harbour uncertainty
