Madrid exhibition reads Dalí through his engagement with Freud
Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza museum is scheduled to open its Dalí–Freud exhibition on 20 October local time.
Running until 24 January 2027, it is an art exhibition, not a test of psychoanalysis as treatment or a diagnosis of visitors.
An influence that began before their meeting
The museum traces Dalí’s encounter with translations of Freud to Madrid’s student residence in the early 1920s, followed by his developing surrealist connection from 1926 and their London meeting in 1938. The exhibition extends beyond that single encounter. It follows his career chronologically, connecting early family experiences and later work with the ideas behind his imagery.
More than a collection of paintings
Six sections connect the works to important stages in Dalí’s biography. Reference paintings and drawings by other artists accompany his own. Independent exhibition reporting confirms the inclusion of varied materials and later work. Being fascinated by a set of ideas does not establish that those ideas explain every meaning in an artist’s work.

Practical details have specific limits
The museum estimates a visit at one hour and 15 minutes, rather than guaranteeing every visitor’s duration. It lists Monday closure, Tuesday–Friday and Sunday hours of 10:00–19:00, and Saturday hours of 10:00–23:00. Saturday free access is limited to 21:00–23:00. These are Madrid local times; reservation availability must be checked separately.
Interpretation is not a medical conclusion
The museum warns that historically and artistically presented sexual themes may make some visitors uncomfortable. Jokes about psychiatric visits in independent coverage are not health advice. Curatorial interpretation is not a demonstrated treatment benefit. Check the official exhibition and booking pages for holidays and revised hours, and distinguish the scheduled opening from direct confirmation of operations on site.
