Hanoi trims blossoms as a familiar autumn fragrance overwhelms some streets
Hanoi has begun selectively removing blossoms from some street trees after residents said their strong fragrance disrupted daily life.
Immediate flower management differs from a longer review of tree density; neither amounts to citywide felling or proof of a particular disease.
Why can a valued tree become a nuisance?
The trees known locally as hoa sua provide shade and a familiar autumn scent. Dense planting beside homes can make a pleasant fragrance feel overpowering. The government notice prioritizes crowded residential areas, schools, hospitals and locations with repeated complaints. A tree’s cultural value and the suitability of its planting location are different questions.
The 992 trees are a targeted work plan
VnExpress reports a plan covering 992 trees on 13 streets from October 16–20. This is not an instruction to cut down or relocate all roughly 14,400 trees reported citywide. Tuoi Tre observed workers using lifting equipment on October 16 and interviewed workers and residents. Planned work must also be distinguished from completed work.

Wholesale replacement is not the policy
The official account separates suitable pruning and care now from proposals to relocate or replace selected trees after surveys. It cautions against unsupported, blanket removal. Residents interviewed on location disagreed: some enjoy the scent, while others want fewer blossoms. Reports of discomfort cannot establish population-wide health damage or toxicity.
What would show whether it helped?
Follow-up should check completed work, residents’ experience, tree condition and street-level density surveys. These sources provide no controlled measurement of fragrance exposure or health effects. The size of any improvement therefore remains unknown. Hanoi’s construction department and the government portal are the next places to check for management updates.
