AlphaFold DB adds complex predictions across 2,812 viral proteomes

Global briefing

Briefings by language

The new set contains 5,279 high-confidence heterodimers made of different proteins and 2,749 homodimers made of matching proteins.

Another 4,681 high-confidence viral homodimers from the Viral AlphaFold Database were added for search and download in one place.

Why pairs matter

Viral proteins work together during replication, entry and immune evasion. A complex model can suggest contact surfaces and narrow experiments.

High confidence is not proof

Scores describe model confidence and structural consistency. Biochemistry, microscopy and structural experiments must show that proteins meet and adopt that shape in cells.

Twenty-three families are not every virus

The release covers selected proteomes from 23 families with human-infecting members. New variants, host context, membranes and post-translational changes may be incomplete.

What researchers do next

Predictions can guide interface mutations and infection models. The open portal speeds candidate selection but does not establish vaccine or drug efficacy and safety.
