A lab process recovered 90% of fluoride from treated PFAS waste
Fluoride left after PFAS destruction was converted from waste into a reusable fluorination reagent.
The experiment starts with treated residue, not untreated soil or groundwater.
Process
Hot carbon releases fluorine species; a porous quartz barrier separates carbon from silver to prevent reduction.
Product
Recovered silver fluoride performed like a commercial reagent, and the silver could be cycled back.

Numbers
The percentages apply to available fluoride in tested streams, not every PFAS-contaminated material.
Scale-up
Energy, silver loss, mixed contaminants, durability, purity and economics remain to be tested.
Next
Pilot mass balance and life-cycle analysis must include the upstream PFAS-destruction step.
