The giant 1947 sunspot could store superflare-scale energy
One of the largest recorded sunspot groups had enough estimated magnetic capacity to enter the superflare range.
Capacity is not occurrence probability, timing or proof of a historical eruption.

Modern relationships between spot area, complexity and flare upper limits were extended to historical observations.
Scale
The group covered about 0.6% of the visible disk and spanned roughly 40 Earth diameters.
