England caps compulsory branded school uniform at three items, or four with a tie

Global briefing
Briefings by language

From September 2026, state-funded schools in England must generally limit compulsory branded school uniform and PE kit to three items in total. Secondary and middle schools may require four when one of those items is a tie.

This is not a three-garment limit and does not ban every branded option. It caps items that families must buy from a specific source; an optional branded item must have an acceptable generic alternative.

What counts as branded?

A logo is not required. A distinctive colour, fabric or design available only from an appointed supplier can count, and compulsory uniform and PE kit are counted together.

Who is covered?

The rule covers state-funded schools and academies in England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate systems, while some hospital schools fall outside parts of the guidance.

How do optional items work?

Schools may offer a branded hoodie or similar option, but must permit a generic equivalent. A team kit that pupils must own also counts toward the cap.

What can parents check?

Check the current policy, second-hand route and named supplier on the school website. If requirements exceed the limit, parents can first ask the headteacher and governing board for the legal basis.

Does it guarantee lower costs?

The item cap can reduce supplier lock-in but does not set a price ceiling for each garment. Savings will vary with the previous policy, retailer pricing and second-hand availability.
