Lisbon Airport inspectors found 67 offences among about 100 taxis — not 67 offending cars
Portugal’s Public Security Police (PSP) inspected about 100 taxis at the arrival hall of Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport on August 25 and identified 67 violations. The largest number of cases, 32, were cases where the meter was not placed in the prescribed location.
This does not mean that all 67 units committed fraud. The unit of counting is the number of violations, not the number of vehicles, and it combines items of different nature such as meter location, documents, fire extinguishers, inspection, and insurance. We must also distinguish between user damage reports and the results of this administrative crackdown.

The PSP Lisbon Metropolitan Command identified about 100 taxis in a crackdown involving the transport department, special police, and city police. Among the 67 violations, there were 32 cases of improper meter location, 8 cases of not having a taxi driver’s license, and 6 cases of lack of required documents.

Six cases of expired fire extinguishers, three cases of failure to conduct regular inspections, two cases of expired meter inspection, and two cases of poor vehicle condition were confirmed. There was also one case each of driving without mandatory insurance and driving while intoxicated. Special inspection was required for two vehicles that were in poor condition.
Why did it attract attention along with the overcharge controversy?
Airport passengers have recently revealed their experiences of not turning on the meters or bypassing them and being asked to pay flat fares in cash. This crackdown was carried out after the complaint, but it was not an investigation that confirmed all the reports. What is confirmed by the official tally is the violation of regulations detected on site.

Before boarding, check the vehicle registration number and see if the meter is working. Then, if you request a receipt, you can leave the departure and arrival locations and the amount. If you are asked for an unexpected fixed fee or feel threatened, you should use the airport police and consumer complaint channels in a safe place rather than arguing.
